As many of you know, I opened a FREE clothing shop inside the Narberth Food Bank this summer. We are
low on several items and I thought you may be able to help. We need:
Men's clothing: suits, jackets, shirts, shoes, coats, pants, belts, etc.
Women's clothing: dresses, pants, shirts, shoes, boots, jewelry, etc.
Kid's clothes: jackets, shoes, boots, pants, shirts, etc.
Please only donate gently used clothing or jewelry and please drop directly at 201 Sabine Ave. in the MELC
building Monday nights from 7-8pm or Tuesdays 10-1 or 6-7:30. Please let me know if those times don't work
and please pass this on to anyone you think may have great things to share. I promise, you will make many
people smile!
The food bank is also in need of the following items which can be brought as well:

Hot and cold cereals
Shelf stable milk

In order to facilitate donations to the Narberth Food Bank, the Narberth Community Library has become a
Drop Off point for donations. There is a receptacle just inside the library front door, in front of the circulation
desk. We hope this will make it easier for library patrons and other Narberth citizens to drop off much needed
donations at a time that is convenient for them. The library is open from 10:00 to 8:00 - Monday thru
Thursday and 10:00 to 5:00 - Friday and Saturday. www.NarberthCivic.org/news is now publishing a self-
updating notice of items currently needed for donation to the food bank at the Narberth Family Resource
Center. The needs change regularly, and so will this list. I hope this will facilitate more efficient giving. Please
remember the food bank! Even just a few extra cans or items from
a trip makes a difference. There is significant and regular need right here in Lower Merion & Narberth. Check
out the article space in the top right hand column of NarberthCivic.org/news under Family Resource Center of

4.) Wednesday, September 17, 2014 through the rest of the week.
New Horizons Senior Center, your local community resource for active adults 55 and older, is now located in
the hub of Narberth, at Narberth Borough Hall, 100 Conway Avenue, 2nd Floor. Since 1976, New Horizons
has been providing a wide array of programs and services to appeal to the interests, talents, and desires of local
seniors, keeping them active, engaged, and independent. For information, resources and news, visit

Volunteers Needed! Become a part of an active network that supports and sustains each other. We’re seeking

Daily Lunch, Monday through Friday at Noon: New Horizons serves a full course lunch every weekday at
Noonfor adults 60 and over. The meals are planned by a local nutritionist and are catered by Betty the Caterer.
Meals are available to eat-in or take-out, for a suggested donation of $2.00 per meal. This program is

a) “12 Weeks to a Healthier You” Nutrition Class--Mondays in September @ 9:15 AM: “12 Weeks to a
Healthier You” is a weekly course starting on Monday, September 8 at 9:15 AM, developed for seniors by the
American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR) that helps seniors learn to increase energy and overall health by
eating smarter and increasing activity. Each week includes an informative presentation, cooking
demonstrations, handouts with how-to steps and tips and recipes.
Eileen Chopnick, registered dietitian-nutritionist, will teach the course and incorporate the AICR
recommendations for cancer prevention, teaching seniors to make dietary changes for lower cancer risk.
Advance registration is requested.

b) Full Circle with Peter Adels--Mondays in September @10:30 AM: Adults 55 and over are invited to join
New Horizons on-site Social Worker Peter Adels in a discussion and support group every Monday in
September at 10:30 AMfor those who are not sure what to do now that they are retired. The group will explore
feelings about topics such as productivity, daily activities during retirement, rest and relaxation, and of course

c) Coping With Loss--Tuesday, September 16 @ 5:30 PM: Are you 55 or over and recently lost a loved one?
New Horizons is starting a new group with Peter Adels to help those experiencing grief address their concerns

d) Caregiver’s Support Group--Tuesday, September 16 @ 6:30 PM: The experience of looking after a loved

Over 55 and tired of walking alone? Seniors interested in getting fit and meeting other fun people, can join the

i) Bucket List Discussion Group with Peter Adels--Friday, September 19 @ 10:30 AM: From skiing down the

the later years of life. Join New Horizons’ on-site Social Worker Peter Adels every other Friday as he leads a
discussion group focused on learning how to achieve all our life goals and plans, whether fun or practical,

j) BINGO--Friday, September 19 @ 12:30 PM: New Horizons popular BINGO tournament continues on

8.) Thursday, October 2, 2014, Begonias: A Perfect Houseplant
Bernard Wiener, a founding officer of the local chapter of the American Begonia Society, calls begonias,"a
perfect houseplant." Find out why at the Narberth Area Garden Club's meeting on October 2, 2014, 7:15 p.m.,
at the Narberth Borough Building, 100 Conway Avenue, Narberth, Pa., 19072, 2nd floor (use Haverford
Avenue entrance). Begonia plants will be available for purchase. His background in horticulture includes
courses at the Barnes Foundation Arboretum and Temple University in Ambler, Pa. A dedicated volunteer, he
has received much recognition for his horticultural work with school children and for Retired Senior
Volunteers (R.S.V.P.). Free for club members; $6. for non-members.
9.) Saturday, October 18, 2014-Narberth’s Oktoberfest!!!
The sixth annual Narberth Oktoberfest is Saturday October 18, 2014, from 5 pm to 9pm. This is the fourth year
it has been held under festival tents in Narberth Park. The $40 ticket price includes local beers, live music, and
festival food, including a pig roast, turkey, pretzels, brats & sauerkraut, dessert, and more. Proceeds benefit
the Narberth Volunteer Fire Department and the Narberth Dickens Festival. Get more info by e-mailing

Is babysitting available?
Yes, but it is limited to the first 50 children of ticket-holders who are pre-registered.
Members of the Narberth Girl Scouts will provide babysitting in the big room at Borough Hall. These teen
girls are all certified babysitters, and they will also have adult supervision. They are raising money for their
troop, so please make an appropriate and generous donation. Kids will play games, have pizza, and watch a
family-friendly movie while parents are around the corner enjoying Oktoberfest. This service is for potty-
trained kids 3 and older.
Once you have purchased tickets, please e-mail [email protected] with:
• parent's name and cell #; and
• children's names and ages.
Can we bring children or babies to the event? How about dogs?
No. We cannot make exceptions to this rule, so please plan accordingly.
Are there any dishes besides Pork and Brats?
We also have turkey and a vegetarian option, as well as a number of side dishes.
Are there any beverages besides beer?
We'll have plenty of beer and bottled water, For the non-beer drinkers, we'll also have some wine available.
(And a few people even brought their own favorite wines last year.)
What if it rains?
The event is rain or shine. These tents are designed to handle some rain, so we should stay dry underneath.
We've actually some rain in past years, and we hardly noticed it.
Do you accept credit cards?
Yes, if you buy online before the day of the event. Our easy and secure Paypal transactions are available to
anyone with a major credit card. You do not need a PayPal account to use it.
Can I buy advance tickets in person?
You can buy with cash at Sweet Mabel before the day of the event.
Will the event sell out? Can we buy tickets at the door?
This event will probably sell out. If there are any tickets left, they will be available for cash-only at the door.
But if you buy in advance (by October 15) you will receive a free souvenir mug with every ticket.
Can I make a contribution to St. Margaret's School?
The online payment form will give you the option of designating $5 per ticket to St. Margaret's School. Or
you can contact a St. Margaret's School representative to buy an advance ticket in person.
