Friday, September 25, 2015 Edition of NarbNet!

September 28, 2015

Welcome to the Friday, September 25, 2015 Edition of NarbNet!

By the time you read this, I imagine there is a creeping feeling of regret leaving the Narb (or even thinking of
leaving the Narb) while the Pope visits Philadelphia and Lower Merion.  That’s okay, just turn around now
and come home.  Beautiful weather, wonderful walks and plenty to do in our downtown this weekend (hint:
we have an excellent Pope crawl planned for Saturday night!)

Saturday and Sunday: Just don’t bother to drive (we’re Narbs, we all have sidewalks and love to walk.)  Take a
stroll around town, dine and shop in our downtown, wait for the Popemobile at St. Charles of Borromeo
Seminary and maybe even bike into Philly on Saturday or Sunday.  We have directions here that will avoid all
the traffic restrictions:
Take Montgomery Avenue (or any adjacent side streets) and make a right onto Bryn Mawr Avenue.
Turn left onto Wynnefield Avenue and then a right turn onto N. Georges Hill and then a left turn on S.
Georges Hill (left at the Mann).
Make a right onto Belmont Avenue, left onto Avenue of the Republic, left on Lansdowne Avenue to the
Philadelphia Zoo then down 34th Street to a left onto Chestnut Street into Center City.
(Please remember to wear a helmet, bring a bike lock and water and obey all traffic laws with regard to riding
in the street.)
Good luck and have a safe trip!

Our Borough Building (100 Conway) will be very busy this weekend with planners and Federal and Local law
enforcement personnel and all indoor Borough Hall and outdoor activities on the Boro’s fields have been
postponed. (If you would like to show our Narb/Nearb spirit--any coffee, desserts or treats will be gladly
accepted at the Borough’s Police Department (with a welcome smile) to help make life a little bit better for our
finest who will be working straight through the weekend and without their families.  Thanks!)

Help the Narberth Lutheran Church!

Here's the plan: 60 volunteers + 2 hours + $5,000 = 20,000 meals.

On Saturday, October 3, Holy Trinity will gather with brothers and sisters at Grace Lutheran Church in the
Mantua neighborhood of Philadelphia to pack 20,000 meals for Grace's food pantry. Each month they serve
thousands of the hungriest people in our city.

We need your help! We're working to raise $5,000 to cover the cost of 20,000 meals. Any size contribution
makes a difference. Each meal costs just 25 cents. $1 can feed 4 families.

You can make a donation by visiting http://www.gofundme.com/phillyhunger. We also have a donation box
on the post outside our church's giving garden, and donation jars set up at local businesses throughout our
town.

If you'd like to serve with us on October 3, we'd love to have you! Transportation and food will be provided. If
you're interested, call (610-664-5503) or email ([email protected]) our church office. Please
share this opportunity with friends and family. All are welcome!

Now here’s a list of fun, entertaining and community events in and about our town (Narberth and Nearberth)
for the upcoming week (and don’t forget to check www.meetthemayor.org for more updates):

1.)     Friday, September 25, 2015, Due to the Borough Hall being used as a
First Responder Center during the World Meeting of Families, New Horizons is
CLOSED September 24, 25 and 28. We apologize for any inconvenience

2.)     Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 7:00 PM, it’s the Narberth Pope Crawl.  One of the most famous people
in the world is staying right down the street from us later this month. The roads could be a mess on Saturday
night - so why drive anywhere? Let’s celebrate the Pope’s visit to the neighborhood Narberth-style - by
sharing a drink with friends while we raise money for a good cause! It's easy. First, pay $5 for our cheap
plastic souvenir cup. Then, stop by any or all three bars in the Narberth “Triangle” see what kind of drink
specials they’ve cooked up for the occasion. All proceeds from the cups go to support the Narberth
Community Food Bank.

3.)     Tuesday, September 29, 2015, Fall Classes at The Handwork Studio are a great way to keep your kids
creative outside of school. These one-hour classes are offered in Handwork & Machine Sewing (Ages 5-12)
and Fashion & Machine Sewing (Ages 8-15). Classes are always enrolling! You can get more details or
register by calling Miss Ana at 610-660-9600 or learn more here: http://bit.ly/thsclass

4.)     Tuesday, September 29, 2015, Tiny Tales , Tuesdays AND Thursdays @ 10:30 a.m. at the Narberth
Community Library. For ages Birth to 5.  Stories, songs and a craft with Miss Janine and Miss Mayuri.

5.)     Tuesday, September 29, 2015, *Narberth Community Food Bank *All are Welcome!*

Narberth Community Food Bank Summer update!

Thank you to all who volunteer, donate and support ending hunger in our community. In order to facilitate
donations to the Narberth Food Bank, the Narberth Community Library has become a Drop Off point for
donations.  There is a receptacle just inside the library front door, in front of the circulation desk. We hope this
will make it easier for library patrons and other Narberth citizens to drop off much needed donations at a time
that is convenient for them.  The library is open from 10:00 to 8:00 - Monday thru Thursday and 10:00 to 5:00
- Friday and Saturday.
www.NarberthCivic.org/news is now publishing a self-updating notice of items currently needed for donation
to the food bank at the Narberth Family Resource Center. The needs change regularly, and so will this list. I
hope this will facilitate more efficient giving. Please remember the food bank! Even just a few extra cans or
items from a trip makes a difference. There is significant and regular need right here in Lower Merion &
Narberth. Check out the article space in the top right hand column of NarberthCivic.org/news under Family
Resource Center of Narberth. Thank you for your support!

6.)     Wednesday, September 30 at 12:45 PM, Shiatsu practitioner Stephanie Howland discusses and
demonstrates the practice of Shiatsu.  Shiatsu, also known as acupressure, is a finger pressure massage
technique that regulates Qi, unblocks energy,  reduces stress and increases well-being.
Come early to enjoy a catered lunch provided by Betty the Caterer for only $2 before the workshop (at noon)
at New Horizons Center, 100 Conway Avenue, Narberth, PA 19072.

7.)     Saturday, October 3, 2015, it’s the Narberth Oktoberfest 2015!

Narberth Oktoberfest 2015 - FAQ

What is it?

The seventh annual Narberth Oktoberfest is Saturday October 3, 2014, from 5 pm to 9pm. This is the fifth year
it has been held under festival tents in Narberth Park. The $45 ticket price includes a souvenir mug, local
beers, live music, and festival food, including a pig roast, turkey, pretzels, brats & sauerkraut, dessert, and
more.  Proceeds benefit the Narberth Volunteer Fire Department and the Narberth Dickens Festival. Get more
info by e-mailing [email protected].

Is babysitting available?
We're confirming that now.  Babysitting is limited to the first 50 children of ticket-holders who are pre-
registered.
Local high school students will provide babysitting in the big room at Borough Hall. These teen girls are all
certified babysitters, and they will also have adult supervision.   They are raising money for group/team
activities, so please make an appropriate and generous donation.  Kids will play games, have pizza, and watch
a family-friendly movie while parents are around the corner enjoying Oktoberfest.  This service is for potty-
trained kids 3 and older.
Once you have purchased tickets, please e-mail [email protected] with:
•       parent's name and cell #; and
•       children's names and ages.
Can we bring children or babies to the event?  How about dogs?
No.  We cannot make exceptions to this rule, so please plan accordingly.

Are there any dishes besides Pork and Brats?
We also have turkey and a vegetarian option, as well as a number of side dishes.

Are there any beverages besides beer?
We'll have plenty of beer and bottled water,  For the non-beer drinkers, we'll also have some wine available.
(And a few people even brought their own favorite wines last year.)

Are there any gluten-free beers?
Yes.

What if it rains?
The event is rain or shine.  These tents are designed to handle some rain, so we should stay dry underneath.
We've actually some rain in past years, and we hardly noticed it.

How do we buy tickets?  Tickets on sale soon!
Click the button on this page to go to the ticket page and pay online.  Our easy and secure Paypal transactions
are available to anyone with a major credit card.  You do not need a PayPal account to use it.

Can I buy tickets in person?
No.  E-mail us if you have a problem purchasing online.

Are there different ticket prices for those who won't be drinking?
All tickets are the same price.  Selling out at full price raises the most money possible for two good causes.
Plus having one price makes things less complicated for our volunteers.

Will the event sell out? Can we buy tickets at the door?
We expect the event to sell out fairly quickly, as it has sold out for the last two years. If there are any tickets
left, we will make an announcement about tickets at the door.

Can I make a contribution to St. Margaret's School?
If you want to, you can.  The St. Margaret's School community helps us sell some of the tickets. Our online
payment form will give you the option of designating $5 per ticket to St. Margaret's School.  Other than this,
all the proceeds from the event go to the Fire Department and the Dickens Festival.

8.)     Sunday, October 4, 2015 it’s the Feast of St. Francis, Blessing of the Animals, 2 PM on the rectory front
lawn of St. Margaret’s Parish, Narberth.
